摘要
This paper studies the long-term trend of business concentration in China from 1978 to 2023. We extend a standard method for estimating firm size distributions to work with limited and diverse data, and validate its accuracy. Using this approach, we estimate top firm shares in the industry, services, and overall economy based on official Chinese statistics. We find that industrial concentration has fluctuated around a low level, shaped by the exit of inefficient state-owned firms and the entry of low-cost private firms. In contrast, concentration in the service sector has risen steadily, mainly due to the rapid growth of large firms in the trade sector. These firms play a key role in China’s ongoing structural transformation.
