摘要
We study how public pensions shape the parenting styles of working-age parents.Leveraging China's staggered introduction of public pensions to its rural population as a quasi-experimental setting, we find that the prospect of receiving a public pension reduces authoritarian parenting among working-age parents,which emphasizes children's obedience,and increases the adoption of authoritative and permissive parenting,which rely on persuasion to encourage children's diligence. We document a similar finding using South Korea's Basic Old-Age Pension Reform as an alternative setting.We find that public pensions reduce parents' reliance on child-provided old-age support,which in turn mitigates their incentive of using authoritarian parenting to enforce children's obedience in providing future old-age support. This shift in parenting styles generates substantial benefits for children,leading to improvements in cognitive and non-cognitive development, psychological well-being,independence and confidence,and social networks.Our findings highlight that how a society treats its retirees fundamentally shapes how the working population raises the next generation.
