摘要
It is well-known in the literature that communities can play an important role in processes of problem-solving and innovation. Yet, it is surprising that related concepts of innovation largely ignore the ways in which communities operate. In this paper, we aim to conceptualize the role of professional industry-based innovation communities that consist of experts and practitioners in a specific knowledge domain, which connect members employed in a firm with others in related or competing firms, universities or government, or with some other affiliation.
We distinguish local and non-local (including virtual) communities, referring to the latter as international communities without a pre-defined geography. Local communities are practice-based and individuals become members through self-identification and mutual recognition by others. These communities draw their expertise from a common industry/technology focus in their home-region. In contrast, international communities have a primary epistemic focus and are not place-based. Their membership is often tied to professional associations or regulatory bodies through dedicated interaction channels (e.g. publications, discussion forums) and community events (e.g. trade fairs, conferences). They play a decisive role in the development of new technologies, although they do not replace the specialized experience-based knowledge local communities can provide.
Large city-regions with a spread of economic specialization (especially global/world and superstar cities) are prime places in which such communities develop and grow. In the innovation process, local communities become linked and develop open-ended networks of innovation that establish and maintain a continuous stream of innovation activity. These connected city-regions gain a comparative advantage over small cities.
