摘要
We examine the impact of China’s 2016 coal capacity reduction policy on the operational performance of coal firms, as well as its broader effects on labor market outcomes and crime. Our analysis shows that the policy significantly enhanced firms’ profitability, reduced their debt burdens, and lowered employment levels. The decline in firm-level employment had wider labor market repercussions: although overall employment in the affected regions remained relatively stable, residents’ annual incomes fell sharply, and public concerns about employment intensified. We also observe an increase in divorce rates. Moreover, the policy contributed to higher crime rates, driven mainly by a rise in property-related offenses, while violent crime remained largely unchanged. These offenses were predominantly committed by unemployed individuals, first-time offenders, and those acting alone, with most cases resulting in relatively short prison sentences.
