摘要
Imperfect memory can sustain widely held stereotypes that are inaccurate. To establish causal evidence, we conduct an online experiment where subjects grade a gender-stereotyped quiz for a class of students and later predict their performances on a similar quiz. We vary (1) reliance on memory by manipulating access to grading records and (2) the class with different gender performance gap. We find that stereotypes—perceived gender performance gaps—persist more when subjects rely on memory, but only when the true performance contradicts stereotypes. This result holds only for group-level, but not for individual-level assessments. Then, we extend the standard Bayesian framework with imperfect memory and find evidence of memory attenuation: reliance on memory substantially reduces how accurately individuals incorporate previously observed performance into their beliefs.

刘卓坤是法兰克福歌德大学经济、金融与管理研究生院（GSEFM）的经济学博士候选人。他的研究领域是行为与实验经济学，重点研究认知偏差如何在个人信念更新和决策中发挥作用。他的研究成果被入选在Economics Science Association World Meeting, Science of Decision Making Conference, 和 Young Economists’ Meeting等会议上汇报。
