摘要
Women have historically been underrepresented in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields, a disparity that has persisted over time. This paper investigates the agricultural roots of the gender gap in STEM education by examining the influence of wetland rice farming in China. Using administrative records of National College Entrance Examination participants from 1999 to 2003, we find that a higher intensity of wetland rice farming is associated with a significantly wider gender gap in science track selection in high school and STEM major enrollment in college. We show that this effect is likely driven by the role of wetland rice farming in shaping a collectivist culture that reinforces biased gender social norms. Additional evidence indicates that wetland rice-farming regions exhibit greater gender disparities in math performance and gendered math stereotypes and a wider gender gap in STEM employment. Our findings highlight the persistent influence of traditional agricultural practices on modern gender outcomes and suggest that effective policies to close the gender gap in STEM should account for deep-rooted cultural norms.

张明昂，中央财经大学财政税务学院副教授。主要研究领域为发展经济学、环境经济学、劳动经济学，在Journal of Development Economics,Journal of Environmental Economics and Management,《经济学（季刊）》《世界经济》《中国工业经济》《数量经济技术经济研究》等期刊发表论文20余篇，主持1项国家自然科学基金青年项目，参与多项国家级项目和省部级委托课题，十多项决策咨询报告获中央领导批示或被省部级以上部门采纳。担任Journal of Environmental Economics and Management,Journal of the Association of Environmental and Resource Economists,《经济学（季刊）》《世界经济》等期刊匿名审稿人。2020年博士毕业于清华大学经济管理学院，2015年本科毕业于南京大学商学院，2018-2019年在美国康奈尔大学访问。
