摘要

How do no-poaching agreements influence the entrepreneurial activities of IT professionals? We answer this question by examining no-poaching agreements among eight leading Silicon Valley tech companies and Department of Justice investigations that terminate these agreements. We propose that no-poaching agreements increase the likelihood of IT professionals experiencing unmet salary expectations and limited career prospects,inducing them to start new businesses. Using a difference-in-differences approach and leveraging data from a major online professional social network platform, we find that no-poaching agreements significantly promote entrepreneurship among IT professionals, leading them to establish their own businesses. Moreover, the effects are more pronounced for IT professionals with IT-related educational backgrounds, prior entrepreneurial experience, and a lack of promotion within their companies. Further analyses reveal that startups founded by IT professionals subject to no-poaching agreements face greater challenges in achieving long-term survival and securing venture capital funding. This research contributes to the literature on IT career trajectories, IT entrepreneurship, and the impacts of labor market monopsony. It also has important practical implications for the career transitions of IT professionals, the HR strategies of IT companies, and anti-trust policy.

葛淳棉,华南理工大学工商管理学院教授、博士生导师、院长助理,新加坡国立大学博士,国家自然科学基金优秀青年科学基金项目获得者,珠江学者特聘教授,广东省自然科学基金杰出青年项目获得者,担任Information Systems Journal副主编、Information Technology & People高级主编、Internet Research副主编等。研究成果发表在Strategic Management JournalJournal of Operations ManagementResearch Policy《管理世界》《管理科学学报》等国内外权威期刊,主持国家自然科学基金项目4项,多项成果获广东省哲学社会科学优秀成果奖一等奖、二等奖,开发的管理案例多次入选全国百篇优秀管理案例和毅伟、哈佛案例库。
