摘要
Using unique data from an insurance company, we study the short-run labor supply of gig workers, the delivery riders, in response to peers’ traffic accidents. We find that delivery riders are more likely to take a day off right after an accident happens to their peers working for the same delivery station. There is also a higher probability for riders receiving the shock to have a break from routine a week after their peers’ accidents. On the contrary, having station peers back to work from accidents increases riders’ willingness to work on the next day and seven days later. The scare-away and come-back effects become larger when peer relationships get closer. The riders’ daily responses are heterogeneous by gender identity, accident type, and rider type. In reaction, the delivery stations hire new riders but need a few days to do so. Within a longer (monthly) time frame, the current riders reduce the days to work, as a result, the delivery stations increase the number of employees.

刘愿，华南师范大学经济与管理学院教授、华南市场经济研究中心（省级文科重点研究基地）副主任。研究兴趣集中在经济史、政治经济学、劳动经济学等领域。主持国家自然科学基金面上项目、国家社会科学基金青年项目、教育部人文社会科学研究青年项目等纵向课题3项。在《管理世界》《经济学（季刊）》《世界经济》及China Agricultural Economy Review等学术期刊发表论文20余篇。
